There are several ways you can be part of the Flemington Fire Department.

See below for more details.

Firefighter

You do not need prior background/experience/training as a firefighter.  All training and equipment is provided free to you.  Most classes are held at night between 7 PM and 11 PM on weekdays with some classes on the weekend.  Firefighter 1 has the base training requirements you must meet to become an interior firefighter, it will be up to you if you want to complete more advanced training courses. Members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Our station is not staffed nor do we require duty shifts. Members are alerted by pagers and texts by the County 9-1-1 dispatchers.  You are responsible to respond when you are available and to respond in a safe manner, observing all traffic laws.

Fire Police

You do not need prior background/experience/training in directing traffic. All training and equipment is provided for free. Classes can be one 8 hour day or a couple hours in the evening. Just like firefighters you would be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and you would be alerted to calls by pagers and texts by the County 9-1-1 dispatchers. You are responsible to respond in a safe manner, observing all traffic laws. Sometimes you may be called upon to assist with traffic details for parades in town or to assist the police department with traffic control.

Junior Firefighter

Junior firefighters can be between the ages of 16 and 18 with written parent or guardian permission. Junior firefighters, under supervision, can perform basic fire ground duties such as changing Scott pack cylinders, pulling hose or repacking hose back on the trucks. Junior firefighters can respond to emergency calls until 10 PM on school nights and 11 PM on weekends or when there is no school in session. They also have to maintain a “C” average in school. They are not allowed to enter a burning structure or assist with hazardous material calls. Junior firefighters will be supervised in the use of all the equipment and will be provided with personal protective envelope (turnout gear) including an orange helmet which designates them as juniors to other firefighters so they are not asked to do task that might put them in harm’s way.

Driver/Pump Operator

You do not need prior background/experience/training as pump operator.  You need to have a valid NJ driver’s license. All training is provided for free. You need to attend a Pump Operator class and go through driver training including participation in a Certified Emergency Vehicle Operation (CEVO) course.

Social Auxiliary Member

This is for people who are not interested in the firefighting aspect of volunteering.  Social Auxiliary Members would help with fundraisers (flower sales, coin toss, parking cars at 4H fair), social outreach programs (Nights Out, Touch a Truck), parades, building maintenance and helping to supply and serve food and beverages at large or extended fires or hazmat vents.  People as young as 16 can serve as a Social Auxiliary Member and no special training is required. For those interested in “Old Betsy” our 1928 American LaFrance engine we would be willing to train you to drive her and do basic maintenance on her so she could be taken to more car shows and other community outreach programs.  Persons interested in driving “Old Betsy” would need to be at least 21 with a valid NJ driver’s license.
