In 1842, an organization known as The Fame Fire Company of Flemington
was incorporated by an act of assembly. Made up of the leading
citizens of that time, it was related to have performed meritorious
service to the Village of Flemington, in protecting life and property.
The
persons who incorporated this charter were:
Samuel Hill
William P. Emery
Abraham Fulper
Mahlon Fisher
John Capner
Charles Miller
Tunis Sargent
Joseph Boss
Wilson Forker
Early equipment consisted of a bucket brigade. Later, a hand
engine known as the “Fame” was acquired. In 1862,
a Chapman Steam Fire Engine was purchased with a hose carriage.
A two story Engine House was erected and The Hopewell Engine
Company was formed. For a short time, Flemington had a paid fire
department. In 1878, a fully volunteer company was founded as
the Flemington Fire Company #1. This company was organized by
twenty-five members on December 28, 1878. The first Chief was
John H. Stockton, and the first President was A.T. Connet. This
is now the Steamer Company #1.
On August 27, 1883, Hook and Ladder Company #1 was formed, and
the first Hook and Ladder truck was purchased on October 18, 1883.
The Fire Department of Flemington was formed from both companies
in April of 1884. Both the Steamer Company #1 and the Hook and
Ladder Company #1 continue to protect the citizens of Flemington
today as the Flemington Fire Department.
